IGFA Praises Passing of Billfish Conservation Act

October 8, 2012

NOTE: The IGFA released the following statement in response to President Obama signing of the Billfish Conservation Act:

Today, President Obama signed the the Billfish Conservation Act into law, effectively banning the importation of all billfish into the continental United States. The signing marks the culmination of a united undertaking by a diverse coalition of angling and conservation organizations working in cooperation with a bipartisan group of congressional champions. Although there are no commercial fisheries targeting billfish in the US, the US has been the largest importer of billfish in the world, importing about 30,000 billfish annually.

“This is a tremendous success for these highly migratory species,” National Coalition for Marine Conservation President (NCMC) Ken Hinman said. “Marlin, sailfish, and spearfish do not know country boundaries and travel through three of the planet’s oceans. Giving them greater protection in the United States sets the stage for better protection worldwide.”

With the largest buyer out of the market, the NCMC and the International Game Fish Association (IGFA), who championed the bill, will now turn their attention to the international challenges facing these imperiled species. And with populations of three species of marlin having declined by more than 50%, their efforts come not a moment too soon.

“Recreational anglers and ocean conservationists have been the primary supporters behind the Billfish Conservation Act,” IGFA President Rob Kramer commented, “and I am confident that with this strong step by the United States, we will be able to raise support for more robust measures elsewhere.”

The support of the Billfish Conservation Act by groups like the American Sportfishing Association, the Center for Coastal Conservation, the Coastal Conservation Association, the Congressional Sportsmen’s Foundation, the Guy Harvey Ocean Foundation, Keep America Fishing, the National Marine Manufacturer’s Association, OCEARCH and numerous partners in the environmental community played an integral part in the bill’s success.

“We have sound science that indicates that billfish are not doing well on a global level,” IGFA Conservation Director Jason Schratwieser added. “Better international protection for these fish benefits open ocean ecosystems and recreational anglers around the world.”

Guy Harvey, Milliken Announce Partnership

April 27, 2012

New flooring collection features artwork by world-renowned marine artist

SPARTANBURG, S.C., April 26, 2012 – A collaboration between internationally known marine artist and environmental conservationist Guy Harvey and Milliken will bring scenes of underwater wildlife to a new flooring collection this spring.  Through a recent licensing agreement, the two brands will combine their areas of expertise to create a variety of indoor rugs and indoor/outdoor accent mats.

The collection – which will cater to those who share an affinity for coastal lifestyles and ocean ecosystems – features marine animals from tropical fish to mako sharks.  To depict accurate environments, it was imperative for Milliken to preserve the inspiration and intense colors behind the artwork.  Milliken’s hi-resolution printing capabilities and color palette enabled photo-realistic interpretations of extremely detailed renderings.

“For our designs to remain detail oriented in a floor covering medium, the most advanced printing capabilities are a must,” said Steve Stock, president of Guy Harvey, Inc.  “Milliken is providing the technology we need to achieve an accurate representation for the Guy Harvey line.”

The initial product offering will consist of more than 25 beautifully crafted area rugs with detailed images of marine life.

  • Indoor rugs will be available in 3×4 feet, 4×6 feet and 6×9 feet
  • Accent mats will be featured in 2×3 feet and 3×4 feet

Additionally, both Milliken and Guy Harvey will donate a portion of the proceeds to benefit the Guy Harvey Ocean Foundation, which supports conservation and best management practices for sustainable marine environments.  Through science and grants, the foundation provides common sense solutions to reversing overfishing, pollution and other threats to the marine ecosystem.

According to Mark Clayton, residential business manager for Milliken, both brands have a history of serving as good stewards of the environment.

“This collection brings Guy Harvey’s artwork to new life, while creating unique experiences for our customers,” he said.  “But what’s also important about this collaboration is our shared stance on sustainability, making the partnership an ideal fit.”

Customers will be able to purchase the collection in retail stores late spring, as well as online through Guy Harvey’s website.
